Polo is a sport (most frequently played on grass), where teams compete against each other, with 4 players on each team, (3 players per team if it’s Arena Polo). Two teams play against each other, with 2 umpires and a 3rd man observing in the stands. Each player rides a pony and carries a mallet, which is used to pass the ball to other team members to enable them to score as many goals as possible, in order to win them the match.

Players have different handicaps which go from -2 through to 10 (-2 being the actively practising beginner and 10 the professional).

There are:

  • 4 chukkas in Low Goal Polo
  • 5 chukkas in Medium Goal Polo
  • 6 chukkas in High Goal Polo
Polo Time Board

Each chukka is 7 minutes in length, with an extra 30 seconds after the first bell is rung. The player has 3 minutes to change onto a fresh mount in order to play in the next chukka. At half time, the player is given 5 minutes to take a drink of water, have a team chat and get on a fresh polo pony.
